ADI introduces a dual-axis inclinometer sensor that provides a linear tilt error of less than 0.1 degrees

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) has released a highly integrated, dual-axis inclinometer that provides industrial equipment manufacturers with an extremely accurate, easy-to-use, and affordable tilt detection solution. The ADIS16209 programmable, dual-axis inclinometer sensor is ideal for a wide range of industrial applications where tilt changes are required, including measurement equipment, factory machine tools, satellite antenna stabilization systems, motion safety monitors, and automotive wheel alignment devices. The same function of the inclinometer solution is typically up to 100 times larger than the ADIS16209.

The ADIS16209 is the industry's most sophisticated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) inclinometer, offering a fully compensated direct-angle output with a linear tilt error of less than 0.1 degrees, resulting in an accuracy that is at least twice that of comparable tilt sensors. This is because the ADIS16209 adds an embedded controller that dynamically detects the system environment using factory-installed correction factors and compensates for direct digital angle outputs to account for errors caused by voltage, temperature, angle, and other parameter changes. Other MEMS-based tilt sensors typically require industrial engineers to perform additional external calibration and signal processing, which adds time, cost, and complexity to product design. In addition, ADI's MEMS-based inclinometers are significantly smaller than other inspection solutions, especially the large electrolytic capacitor-type tilt sensors that require dedicated mounting of the board. As a result, the ADIS16209 gives design engineers the option to easily integrate new precision sensors almost as they wish.

"The ADIS16209 provides accurate direct bit output angle information in a standard semiconductor format," said Andy Garner, director of iSensor smart sensor product line at Analog Devices, Inc., which is fundamentally different from electrolytic capacitor tilt sensors and low integration MEMS-based sensors. . There are two important reasons for the on-chip dynamic compensation of the ADIS16209: first, it allows our customers to handle the changes in the middle of the system design without worrying about the time to market; second, it provides the end user with the ability to accurately detect the data. The device is capable of preventing expensive and cumbersome recalibration that may result from environmental changes in the field. ”

About the ADIS16209 inclinometer

The ADIS16209 dual-axis programmable inclinometer, based on Analog Devices' iMEMS-integrated microelectromechanical system core, measures biaxial tilt with an error of less than 0.1 degrees over a ±30 degree measurement range when it is mounted horizontally. Thanks to its unique dual-axis mode of operation, this new sensor also supports vertical installation of single-axis inspection over a full 360 degree range. Adjustable digital sensor data is output via an industry-standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) that provides tilt (0.025 resolution), acceleration (0.244mg resolution), temperature, and supply voltage. The ADIS16209 also features a 12-bit auxiliary ADC input and DAC output, digital self-test capability, and configurable status monitoring, including an alarm. The sensor operates from a single 3V to 3.6V supply and is capable of withstanding 3500g shock.
